Bridge Directors

If you love bridge and enjoy traveling, then being a Bridge Director aboard one of our ships will be a dream come true. The cruise lines look for individuals who have "hands on" knowledge and excellent interpersonal and communications skills. The bridge program is an essential program aboard our cruise ships. You will be expected to lead bridge games, teach passengers, and interact with the cruise staff, so the quality of the presentations must meet the high standards set by the cruise line.

You are required to be an ACBL certified teacher and Bridge Director and must be able to issue Master Points. The games are sanctioned and after the cruise disembarks you should post the points for qualified guests with the ACBL. If you have a laptop computer, please bring it with you for scoring.

During the cruise you will provide a specified number of lectures and/or lessons and lead bridge games on board. The exact number of lectures, lessons and bridge games will be determined by the Cruise Director's staff. They will inform you of the schedule details once you are on the ship. The lectures and lessons should be 45 minutes to an hour in length, be entertaining and informative, with a question and answer period at the end. Every night all passengers receive a cruise newsletter with the following day's schedule and activities. Be sure to read this carefully to find out if there have been any changes in your schedule.

Note: You must be willing to teach beginner and partner bridge.

All of our Cruise Ships have Duplicate Boards and cards. Most ships don't allow food or beverages in the card room. Please don't ask for these items to be brought in. You should prepare to bring anything else needed for your sessions. The Cruise Director is responsible for all of the entertainment and activities on the ship, including the bridge program. A Cruise Staff member will meet with you on the first day and confirm your schedule - everything must be coordinated through the Cruise Director's Department.

The appropriate attire for male Bridge Directors is nice slacks with a long-sleeved shirt or a Polo shirt with a sport jacket. No tie is necessary. Casual cruise wear is suitable for women - either a pantsuit, pants with a coordinated top, a casual dress or a skirt and blouse- but please no shorts or sandals.

You are considered an independent contractor. You are not allowed to solicit any business during the cruise. This includes handing out business cards, email addresses, advertising brochures, videotapes or other items that would publicize private lessons or your expertise. You are onboard for a vacation and the bridge program is solely for the pleasure of the passengers, not a means to acquire new business.

The party atmosphere of a cruise lends itself to consuming alcohol. Social drinking is allowed (one or two drinks), but excessive consumption of alcohol is prohibited. It will not only impair your ability to be an effective Bridge Director, but it is inappropriate and unpleasant for the cruise guests. The Captain of the ship has the authority to immediately dismiss intoxicated staff members, including the Bridge Directors. The moral of the story is to drink responsibly. Smoking is not permitted in any public area.

Objectionable statements are not permitted. This includes offensive jokes, obscenities or disparaging remarks about any person or group on the basis of race, color, creed, sex, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability or national origin. This behavior would be damaging, not only to you, but to the reputation of the cruise line.

If you anticipate a problem, or receive a negative comment, please discuss it with the Cruise Director immediately. Do not wait until the end of the cruise and have negative comments appear on your evaluation. If you are not properly performing your responsibilities, you will be required to attend a special meeting with members of the staff. If your behavior continues to be unacceptable, you will be terminated from your duties and arrangements for your debarkation at the next available port will be arranged at your own expense. If you have any questions or concerns, the Cruise Director or cruise staff is always available to assist you.

A Bridge Director is not allowed to play bingo, horse racing, or any other activity in which prizes may be won. Other shipboard activities such as lectures or sporting activities are permitted. The Bridge Director is not allowed to accept gratuities at any time.

You may not use, possess or bring, any narcotics, other controlled substances, any firearms or other weapons either on or off the ship.

Do not fill out the comment card at the end of the cruise.

You will be receiving confirmed cabin space, which is a double passenger cabin. As a Bridge Director onboard you are NOT permitted to ask for any kind of a stateroom change. If you are on for more than one sailing, we will always try to keep you in the same cabin. We will be contacting you with your cabin number approximately 1 week prior to sailing. Please bring your VALID PASSPORT and picture I.D. Please make your air or ground travel arrangements so that you board the ship between 12:00 Noon and 2:00 PM the day of sailing. Please always check your cruise itinerary at the Cruise Line's website and if there is any discrepancy, call our office. Usually, you will find a welcome letter in you cabin stating a time to meet with a cruise staff member to discuss when and where you will be lecturing/playing. If no letter is in your cabin leave a note and your room number at the information desk for the Cruise Director or Assistant Cruise Director to let them know you are onboard.

If you cancel your voyage or make any other changes in plans, you must notify "To Sea With Z" immediately. If you should cancel your cruise less than 12 weeks prior to sailing for any reason, you will forfeit the entire fee paid. If the cruise line cancels the trip prior to departure, you will receive a full refund for the monies paid to "To Sea With Z."

Once aboard the ship you can look forward to a wonderful experience. Not only will you enjoy leading bridge games for the other passengers, you will meet new people and visit exotic destinations. If you sign up for Shore Excursions you will experience the unique culture of each port. And on the cruise you can enjoy the other shipboard activities such as the discos, the pool and the shows, not to mention the gourmet cuisine.
